Gothenburg City Museum

The Gothenburg city museum is located in the magnificent Swedish East India Company's office and warehouse building, built during the mid-18th century. The museum's exhibitions is telling the story of Gothenburg and covering over 1200 years of history. A few of the pictures I took while there (a lot of the exhibits have glass in front of them)

Viking age

The Äskekärrsskeppet is the only ship from the Viking era on display in Sweden. It is also the only Viking ship in the world with runic inscriptions.

The middle ages - Norwegian St.Olav introduced this exhibition

Needles and thimbles - not changed too much over the last few hundred years

A modell of the Älvsborg fortress

The hall leading from the latter middle ages/early modern times

to the 18th century

Just a curiosity - chamber pots - one female and one male

The cupboard for the city key

The luxury items imported by the East India Company was among other things sugar

 tea

porcelain

Since this is first and foremost a craft blog - a few more sewing related items - these from the 1700ds

A few glimpses of the 19th Century:

 The museum courtyard

We spent quite a few hours looking at the exhibitions and there's heaps more to look at. The museum is well worth a visit if you're ever in Gothenburg.

Hugs and stitches from Anne Ida
